of death in the United States, accounting for $444 billion in healthcare expenditures in 2010.1, 2 Reducing dietary cholesterol has long been part of the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) guidelines on lifestyle management. Current AHA/ ACC guidelines state that insufficient evidence exists to determine whether lowering dietary cholesterol intake reduces serum cholesterol, but still recommend limiting intake to less than 300 mg per day.3† The Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet promotes less than 200 mg per day4 and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet recommends less than 150 mg per day.5

Slippery Slope of Triglycerides
For years, the scientific and medical communities have pondered the role of triglycerides in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality risk. Although several studies have shown a relationship between elevated triglyceride levels and CVD, the degree to which triglycerides are independently associated and whether triglycerides directly cause CVD has been hotly debated. This is in contradistincti...

Background: Studies have shown that patients with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) are susceptible to various diseases including dislipidemia and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). In this study for the first time, we evaluated the relationship between dietary intake and metabolic variables of 162 patients. Methods: This cross sectional study was done in Tehran University of Medical Sciences. All of the...
متن کاملThe relationship between dietary lipids and serum visfatin and adiponectin levels in postmenopausal women.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death in humans, particularly in postmenopausal women. Inflammation has been shown to play a basic role in the development of CVD. In light of the involvement of adipocytokines and dietary lipids in the induction of inflammation in CVD, this study was conducted to investigate the potential relationship between dietary lipids and two well-kn...
متن کاملPlant sterols and cardiovascular disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis†
The impact of increased serum concentrations of plant sterols on cardiovascular risk is unclear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate whether there is an association between serum concentrations of two common plant sterols (sitosterol, campesterol) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We systematically searched the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, and COCHRANE for stud...
متن کاملThe role of level and function of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) in Cardiovascular Diseases
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a set of particles with heterogeneous structures that have different functions due to various compounds including surface charge, size, lipid, and protein compounds. Several prospective epidemiological studies have demonstrated that there is a clear inverse relationship between serum HDL concentration and risk of coronary heart disease, despite this relationshi...
متن کاملLarge-scale cohort study on the relationship between serum lipid concentrations and risk of cerebrovascular disease under low-dose simvastatin in Japanese patients with hypercholesterolemia: sub-analysis of the Japan Lipid Intervention Trial (J-LIT).
BACKGROUND The Japan Lipid Intervention Trial was a nationwide cohort study of 52,421 hypercholesterolemic patients treated with open-labeled simvastatin for 6 years under standard clinical practices. Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death in Japan, but the effect of hypercholesterolemia on CVD has not been well established in Japanese patients. This study aimed to ...
